Measure

Air Passenger Duty

The measure

Air Passenger Duty (APD) rates have been announced for 2024-25. The reduced rate for domestic flights will increase by 50p to £7. The long haul and ultra-long haul economy rates will increase by £1. There will be no change to the rates for short haul international flights.

Who will be affected?

The travel and aviation industry, and its customers.

When will the measure come into effect?

The APD rates will be as follows.

Bands (approximate distance in miles from the UK)

Reduced rate (lowest class of travel) from 1 April 2024

Standard rate (other than the lowest class of travel) from 1 April 2024

Higher rate from 1 April 2024

Domestic (flights within the UK)

£7

£14

£78

Band A (0 to 2,000 miles)

£13

£26

£78

Band B (2,001 to 5,500 miles)

£88

£194

£581

Band C (over 5,500 miles)

£92

£202

£607

Where a class of travel provides a seat pitch in excess of 1.016 metres (40 inches), the standard rate is the minimum rate that applies.

The higher rate applies to flights on aircraft of 20 tonnes and above, with fewer than 19 seats.

Our view

Following the introduction of the domestic and ultra-long haul bands from 1 April 2023, these increases will be in line with RPI.
