Measure

Digitalising business rates

The measure

The digitalising of business rates consultation in England relates to the local authorities responsible for levying and collecting business rates. Local authorities have separate systems to carry out this function, meaning businesses with multiple properties will receive a separate invoice for each property from the authority in which that property is located.

It is proposed that this data be centralised and combined with HMRC’s tax data, providing uniformity in terms of collection and administration of reliefs.

Who will be affected?

All business ratepayers and the 309 billing authorities in England.

When will the measure come into effect?

The government is publishing their responses to the feedback received and a date is yet to be confirmed.

Our view

This should be welcomed by ratepayers and local authorities, providing ratepayers with a uniform and integrated system to interact with central government, cutting down the administrative burden on all stakeholders.
